It’s a reaction to thinking China has better AI, not thinking AI has less value.

So I guess there is a use case for AI,
It’s almost like out of a movie, the technology can only be used to benefit evil.
Am Canadian, I see 78k so yes
That has its drawbacks too though, federating with many, many instances will eventually cause strain.
I do want more growth via instances, but imo it’s more like a double edge sword than the salvation of a platform.
Don’t expect perpetual growth from the fediverse for one good reason:
It would cost more money.
Lemmy is self hosted and there are people who use their own personal money to host these things and have a certain amount of activity.
Doubling the users would double the cost but it would not double the usefulness for the instance owner.

Now this is a technology post!

I appreciate the warning

I appreciate him doing this after intel lost their magic, otherwise, it would have been much harder emotionally.

No no, it would work out,
You got to pay a subscription so your CPU doesn’t burn any transistors every month.

Elon is too self obsessed to properly train a successor.
I bet he is the type that would want his mind uploaded and that entity to be given all the wealth.

What? It worked out for Twitter shareholders though.
What bothers me about all these political posts is when people act surprised when profit seeking people act purely in their self interest.
I agree it’s bad, but it’s weird to be constantly mad about things so obvious like parasites acting parasitically.

The new 5000 series have them and they come out end of the month. Hence why it’s surprising to hear about 2 generations ahead.

Wait, they sell PCIe 5.0 now, does that mean 6.0 has already been fully specked out?

Sounds like a lack of a good role model

The monkey needs a hug.

Instructions unclear, ended up in a cabin alone in the woods.

Pretty good article, this stood out for me:
Something about George Romero’s 1978 film about doomed survivors riding out the zombie apocalypse in a shopping mall feels resonant today as I look across Meta’s suite of AI-created profiles. The movie’s blue-skinned corpses don’t know they’re dead. They just wander through the shopping center on autopilot, looking for something new to consume.
That’s how many of our social media spaces feel now. Digital town squares populated by undead posters, zombies spouting lines they learned from an LLM, the digested material from decades of the internet spewed back at the audience. That’s what Meta is selling now.

Does this mean there will be less mainstream interest with step porn?
But that’s assuming there is actual high demand for running big models locally, so far I’ve only seen hobbyists do it.
I agree with you in theory that they just want more money but idk if they actually think locally run AI is that big of a threat (I hope it is).
