  • People who bought a Tesla before Musk publicly went hard right couldn’t know. If I was one of them, I’d look at selling the vehicle, but I understand long-time Tesla owners don’t want the aggravation or take a financial hit reselling an undesirable vehicle.

However, people who buy a Tesla vehicle today clearly buy the baggage that comes with it in full knowledge of what they’re buying and I have nothing but contempt for them.

  • I don’t have good memories of Gen X, just memories as assholes older than me who judged everyone based on what music they listened to and were absolutely assholes if your music wasn’t cool enough.

And you base your opinion of an entire generation on that?

There are good people and bad people in all generations alike. One day you too will be older, and you’ll be at the receiving end of undeserved criticism for things you’ve never said or done because some young dude met someone else the same age as you they didn’t like.

  • “Boomers” has been misappropriated by younger generations to mean anything from older people they disagree with, older people they feel have undue privileges they don’t have, or older people who were born before the internet became widespread.

The scapegoating mostly points at gen-X’ers though, not true boomers. The boomers are hitting the retirement homes at this point.

  • I think I would because I know what it’s like to have a real job and pay my bills with it - as opposed to being born into a rich family or striking it rich because you were the right tech bro at the right time and you got lucky (and you fucked your partners over a little too).

There’s a million interesting social projects I would like to donate to. People and organization who don’t need all that much to do a ton of good around them. I would feel truly happy to donate to them and feel as though I had a net positive impact in my community.

And also, I despise the arrogant tax-evading billionnaire class so much, I don’t think I could live with myself if I realized I had become one of them without realizing some day. Just that thought alone would keep me on my toes every day I think.

  • Knowing you have another half century left

I hate to break it to you, but that’s unlikely.

When you’re 50 in the US, you have a little less than 30 springs left on average. a few more if you live in a country with a functional healthcare system.

Think about it: when you turn 50, you’ll only get to say “summer is coming” 30 times. Merry Chrismas or Happy New Year to your family 30 times. Or “I’ll do it next year” 30 times. And when you’re 50, you know 30 years pass quickly.

And that’s if the big C or COVID or something equally stupid doesn’t get you first.

To the OP: enjoy your youth while you can. It’ll be over before you know it. Trust me on this one.

  • Just read whatever you find anywhere and leave out the opinionated bits.

In other words, you can safely assume the hows, whens, wheres and to a certain extent the whys are accurate and not made up, and anything else - particularly whether he was right or wrong, the bits about whether his victim was right or wrong, whether the cops are lying, whether the McD employee is evil, whether Mangione should be freed or fried… is all a bunch of ultra-biased hogwash, regardless of the bias.

  • I use Github for 4 reasons:

    • Everybody else is on Github. Github is to repo hosting what Youtube is to video hosting. It’s sad but that’s how it is in this world of unchecked, extreme big tech monopolization. So I put my stuff up there because it’s just simpler to be found.
    • I use Github as a dumb git repo. I don’t use any of the extra social media garbage Microsoft tacked onto it. So I get free hosting and Microsoft pretty much gets no data on me - i.e. I’m a net loss to them.
    • You can use dumb repos as PPA and RPM sources, if you need to distribute Debian or Redhat packages. Microsoft never intented for repos to be used this way, but if I can abuse Microsoft services, I will six ways to Sunday.
    • Github lets you drop videos in your README.md. But here’s a trick: you can use the links to the video files anywhere. In other words, you can use Github to host videos that you can post on other forums - including here on Lemmy, or on Reddit if you’re still patronizing that cesspit for some reason. I find this a nice way to abuse Microsoft’s resources also, and I’m all for abusing Microsoft’s resources.

TL;DR: I use Github not only because it’s the most prevalent git hosting service out there, but because I can abuse it and make Microsoft pay for the abuse without getting anything of value from me in return.
